Food Allergy
A food allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts to specific foods. Although allergic reactions are often mild, they can be serious.
Asthma
Asthma is a common lung condition that affects the ability to breathe. This might mean difficulties breathing from time to time, or breathing problems most of the time.
Hay Fever
Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen, usually when it comes into contact with your mouth, nose, eye and throat. Pollen is a fine powder from plants.
Hay fever is usually worse between late March and September, especially when it is warm, humid and windy. This is when the pollen count is at its highest.
Urticaria
Urticaria, also known as hives, is where itchy pink/red swellings appear on the skin. 1-5 of us gets urticaria at some stage in out life. Each urticaria swelling can last from a few hours to 3 days.
Meet the Team
Dr Anne-Marie McGinley
Dr Anne-Marie McGinley graduated from UCC in 2000 and then completed the Cork General Practice Training Programme. She was awarded a Masters in Allergy and Immunology from Imperial College London in 2016 before establishing the Weir Allergy Clinic. She has a particular interest in food allergy prevention and immunotherapy treatment of allergic disease.In 2022 she became module coordinator and tutor in UCC on the masters in child health. Dr McGinley lives in Clonakilty with her husband and two children.
Nurse Niamh Ryan
Niamh has a special interest in allergy testing and has completed allergy training in King’s Hospital in London. She also works with the allergy team in Cork University Hospital and has many years’ experience in skin prick testing, education and training of food allergies, eczema and anaphylaxis.
FAQs
- You do not need a referral to make an appointment.
- On the day of your appointment you will check in with reception. The Allergy Doctor will see you first. She will take a medical history and ascertain what testing you require. You will then be shown to our Allergy Nurse who will undertake the testing.
- Skin prick testing – It involves putting a drop of liquid onto your forearm that contains a substance you may be allergic to. The skin under the drop is then gently pricked. If you’re allergic to the substance, an itchy, red bump will appear within 15 minutes.
- Blood tests may be used following your consultation with the Allergy Doctor.
- Following either of the above forms of testing you will return to you Allergy Doctor and they will go through your results and advise you on how best to manage any allergies that may be highlighted during testing.
- We can accommodate two patients from the same family on the same day please discuss when appointment is being booked.
- Adrenaline pen training
- Immunotherapy – Used to treat severe hay fever, allergic rhinitis and dust mite allergy. Please ask your doctor for further information.

- The fees for our services are not covered by any of our national health insurance agencies. The fees for our services are not covered by medical card. You can reclaim some of the fees if you have health insurance so it’s important to hold on to your receipts. Also, you can claim health costs against tax on the Med 1 form (ask your accountant about this or read the advice on the Revenue website).
- Overseas health insurance companies may cover the fees but it’s up to you to check this with your insurer.
